The most common type of milling machine is a CNC mill. CNC mills are computer controlled vertical mills with the ability to move the spindle vertically along the Z-axis. Using the Z-axis is particularly useful for die-sinking, engraving applications and milling 2.5D surfaces such as relief sculptures. You can combine the use of this type of mill with conical tools or a ball nose cutter to improve significantly milling precision without slowing down your milling process so that you have a cost-effective solution for your flat-surface hand-engraving work. The most advanced CNC mill is the 5-axis machine, which adds two more axes to the normal XYZ configuration. The addition of the C or Q axis allows for the rotation of a horizontally mounted workpiece and the fifth axis, the B-axis, controls the tilt of the tool.
