When it comes to CNC machining, we at CNC Masters thought we had seen it all. But did you know that there is a trend of using CNC milling machines to paint? Artists experimenting with new ways to put paint to canvas have replaced their bits with paintbrushes, creating customized toolpaths for their abstract art endeavors.
One artist named Jeff Leonard has built a pair of his own unique Arduino-driven CNC painting machines, and the results are quite incredible.
The first of these two machines is set up on a 5ā x 7ā table and includes a variety of customized tools for the creation of his art. Along with a fairly standard set of markers, pencils and pens, it also has an airbrush with a five-color paint feed system, a brush that is fed paint through a pump syringe, and a pin striping paint wheel.
Unlike the rather traditional CNC design of Leonardās first machine, machine number two is a standup unit that paints on a canvas resting at eye level. Even more interesting than its standing design is the fact that this machine makes absolutely no mess! Water is pumped into the brush to create art on āmagic paperā. The water transforms this particular paper to black, creating black-and-white line work without the hassle of cleaning up paint or any other messy art materials at the end.
Leonard shares videos of the design process as well as photos of his finished works on his Instagram account, which you can view here.
